Catherine Holt dresses in a cornucopia of styles - hybridizing color schemes and styles as she goes about her life. As if a lizard on a windowpane, Catherine routinely finds herself changing her public image by adding or removing colorful accoutrements and clothes to befit environmental changes as Catherine navigates the universe, to make as her own statement and her way of life . Catherine is compelled to become a pop-culture icon in the music industry.
Catherine M. Holt is a singer whom comes from a family of women stage-singers going back four generations. The Holt family are considered to be originally from Los Vegas yet who have a tradition that lies in the family members becoming stars who travel the world on road tours for the music industry and never settle down. Catherines’ music interests are primarily found in pop-culture, yet Catherine has a secret yen in the theater of the music world - classic operas.
I Catherine Mickey Holt settles on an apartment that is the entire floor of a Japantown building with a large mural covering the side. The enormous mural of a woman’s face done is painted with primary colors as a cell from a dramatic cartoon, or a work of art by Lichtenstein. Catherine enters her top floor one-room warehouse apartment by the metal stairs that rise at a comfortable angle from the sidewalk level from a walkway between two buildings.
The artwork of the woman’s face incorporates and covers the entire wall of the several story building and includes the metal stairs and a landing in front of the entrance.
Catherine shops for her food, for her clothes, for home products and gifts for her friends mostly in the local Asian markets and shops around the location of her apartment where she resides - the warehouse with the painted mural on the side, in MidTown Los Angeles. Catherine has never lived anywhere for more than 18 months, however Catherine has recently and for the first time in her life signed a two-year lease at that colorful site in Mid-Town Los Angeles.
To Catherine the areas’ cliché vintage retro-character is of that style found of Los Angeles that she appreciates most in her life - yet, finds it muted and also difficult to describe .
The pseudo-derelict neighborhood is at times filled with homelessness and vagrancy if only because of the dark industrial warehouses nearby that by logistics and destiny mire than planning nor planning policy can explain, meet-up with the interurban landscapes creating a sense of vacancy and emptiness. However, that same area of Los Angeles is also home to some of the best if not the most infamous lounge and bar music venues on the West of Coast, or anywhere in North America.
The area is part of the historic era at the inception of punk-music - and yet the story untold. To Catherine it is somehow reminiscent of the dawn of classic Rock N Roll and the creation of Elvis !
Catherine seeks the old music venues of her part of Los Angeles to bring forth the past style and sounds of the past and in her own way to promote change in the music industry. As a member of the important Holt Family, Catherine has always been an avid proponent of the humanities, cultural awareness and of personal expression through making music.
Catherine continues to read the blog by JAKE at his website and Catherine hopes that JAKE’s theory might be able to find the hybridization she perceives is there in her part of Los Angeles, can be there for others in modern Los Angeles and based upon her Pop-music-star reality.
Catherine decides to contact JAKE to find out more about him and if his theory as her goal is to utilize both to begin creating a hybrid-culture of music and society of Los Angeles ; so as to allow for her life becoming a modern punk-rock-opera, in the making.
Catherine’s life has become a story of the unfolding of her enjoyment by bringing forth ways to show what she discovers for others to enjoy as well as what has been missing or overlooked in the story of the music industry’s past in Los Angeles at the inception of the then unheard of music known as “punk rock” .
Catherine sees herself as the next pop-culture music industry diva, however her self importance is ever-eclipsed by the greatness of the most talented singer in our times HELENA ONO ; the the opera singer of Manhattan’s Metropolitan Opera House and proclaimed living diva in our times to bring awe and bring speculation to any who know of her.
Catherine’s grave-respect for the opera singer HELENA ONO is based in her consummate love of her own voice and her affect as she finds she has the ability to effect changes in the world as fast as her voice can be carried. Catherines’ education by her family’s important, yet deceased, iconic pop-culture stars and her finding the theories of JAKE from his website, as well as her new move to Los Angeles have lead Catherine to believe in herself and her dreams of being a diva of the modern music industry as her fated destiny seems to be.
Catherine hopes to meet JAKE and be able to find more of that creative energy that his theories offer and that so many have passed-bye, and hopes that JAKE will assist her to create a better example of music, a hybridization of musical cultures and styles in and about Los Angeles, and for Catherine to rise to fame and fortune with.
Catherine slowly wanders the streets at night, quietly taking in the symbols and symbolism in the architecture - of the old nights clubs, the decorations in their strangely baroque interiors and the descriptions by a deceased family member’s journal ; of a culture of art and music culture that has shown-up there allows Catherine to use her education and background in art to begin to create a new theory of symbolism, communication and language - that JAKE calls “culture-lingo”.
She is taken aback by the way her imagination takes flight and paranoia makes her freeze from anticipation of an attacker - yet, the empty streets are only home to innocent vagrants whom are at worst mindless and working to further creatively cover the area with more layers of symbols and symbolism through graffiti and primitive urban artwork of their own.
